Compulsory Basic Training (CBT)
CBT must be completed before a learner moped or motorcycle rider is allowed to ride on the road with L-plates.
You will need to complete a CBT if you want to ride a moped (a moped has an
engine not over 50 cc with maximum design speed not exceeding 50 kilometres per
hour (km/h) which is approximately 31 miles per hour). You will also need to
complete a CBT if you wish to progress to a full motorcycle licence.
1. Introduction
After welcoming you on to the course, your instructor will spend the first 30
minutes describing the parts of the CBT, and will also examine your provisional
licence and carry out a basic eyesight test.
2. Practical on-site training
During this session your instructor will give you important information about
safety and protective equipment, in particular the correct selection and fit of
helmets. You’ll then be shown the controls of the motorbike you’ll be using,
along with important daily or weekly maintenance and safety checks.
3. Practical on-site riding
This session is spent riding the bike on the training pad, a dedicated off-road
area. Starting from first principles, you’ll be taken through all aspects of
bike control, and in the course of the session you’ll carry out specific
maneuvers, including emergency stops and low speed u-turns. As the session
progresses, your skills will increase – leading to the point where you’re ready
to go out on the road. It’s important to understand that there is no upper time
limit on this session, as preparation for road riding it’s vital that the basic
skills are mastered, and that you are comfortable and confident on the bike.
4. Practical on-road training
During this session your instructor will brief you on the coming ride, including
communications, the nature of the route, and what to do if you become separated
in traffic. You’ll be fitted with a radio receiver and earpiece, and after some
final checks, you’ll be ready to go.
5. Practical on-road riding
You’ll spend a minimum of two hours riding on the road, in both town-centre and
suburban areas. You’ll be accompanied at all time by your instructor (on a
different bike), and you’ll receive regular guidance, advice and route
directions by radio. At various points you’ll pull into a quiet area and carry
out the low speed maneuvers you practiced in session 3, including emergency
stops and u-turns.
Once you’re back at the training centre, your instructor will discuss the ride,
and the day as a whole, giving you important feedback.
If your riding and approach meet the requirements of the Driving Standards
Agency (DSA), you’ll be issued with the Driving Standards Agency Certificate of
Completion (DL196). Occasionally, students may require additional tuition or
further time on the bike. If this is the case your instructor will discuss the
points to be re-visited, and arrange a day and time convenient to you to
continue the CBT – there will be no additional cost to you. We’ll only issue a
DL196 if your instructor is happy that you have displayed the basic competency
required to ride a motorbike in traffic conditions – your safety is of the
highest concern to us. |
